I've been looking at power supplies for a MiQi build farm.
The chinese power supplies scare me, because 99% of them have fake compliance labelling.
If opening a low-cost power supply, you will see that the traces for mains are too close together for 230VAC (but it would be acceptable for 110VAC). They would never make approvals anywhere in the EU, thus the CE marking is fake (CE also requires both model and manufacturer's name).
Now what I did was to go to both RS and Farnell and search for switch mode power supplies.
I then carefully read through the descriptions of the most suitable I could find (eg. 5V and more than 8A).
Two brands made it to the top: MeanWell and Artesyn.
Artesyn has very good specs. Especially if you want a light-weight power supply (it weighs between 100g and 118g, depending on which model you want).
Artesyn's NPS-family can be used for IT and hospital equipment and it has all the approvals necessary. One I find very interesting is the NPS62-M, which is a 12A, 60W PSU, it weighs 118g. NPS42-M is only 10A, 50W, also weighs 118g. NPS22-M is only 8A, 40W, but weighs 100g. Efficiency for the NPS-family is around 87% and max. 2% voltage change when the input voltage changes. Also max. 2% voltage change when the load changes.
Note: Artesyn's PSUs come as PCBs wihtout enclosure, so you need to 'box' it yourself.
Input voltage is 90VAC ... 265VAC. A
Artesyn NPS62-M: RS: 751-1572, Farnell/Newark/Element14: 1886193
Artesyn NPS42-M: RS: 751-1554
Artesyn NPS22-M: RS: 751-1541
If you want a PSU for a more permanent installation, MeanWell might be more interesting.
I found the following in the LRS family:
LRS-100-5: 5V DC, 18A, 90W, height is 30mm, so it easily fits in a 1U rack case.
Efficiency is 86% (up to 89%). Voltage change is even lower than Artesyn's.
Input voltage: 85VAC ... 264VAC, so you can use it everywhere without modifying it.
MeanWell LRS-50-5: RS: 106-5829
MeanWell LRS-75-5: Farnell/Newark/Element14: 2816002
MeanWell LRS-100-5: RS: 106-5843, Farnell/Newark/Element14: 2815972
There's over-voltage protection and surge protection on all mentioned PSUs.
You might also be able to find them on Mouser, DigiKey, eBay and Amazon - try searching for the model numbers.
I think I will end up purchasing both the 18A PSU from MeanWell and a few from Artesyn, because I will want to build a MiQi farm and a 2.5" RAID.
Note: I just ordered 2 EspressoBIN boards. I hope that one of them will be able to act as a host for the MiQi boards (through a switch). I'll add extra Ethernet ports (it seems it's possible to add up to 3 extra via USB3.0 and maybe one or two via Mini-PCIe, but some dual port Mini-PCIe cards do not work with Armbian).
